CONSUMER ELECTRONIC TRENDS FOR 2010
In anticipation for my upcoming trip to CES 2010, I thought it appropriate to post some predictions of what types of products we’ll see at the event:
- TV-Everywhere Solutions: I’ve been writing about this shift to Internet television for quite some time now. In the past, systems like Flo-TV, Boxee, and QUALCOMM’s subscription-based TV were introduced, but there is still no major player in this space that offers everything you’d like to watch on regular TV and with access to Showtime, Netflix, and HBO. Finding a seamless solution to streaming my favorite content will be one of my main areas of interest this trip.
- 3D: Though 3D was a big trend of last year’s show, not many TV manufacturers were behind the idea. This year will be different; I think we will see 3D as a more viable option with new TVs, 3D content, and better eyewear.
- Tablets & Netbooks: There will be more netbooks that are lighter with more functionality, and of course tablets. Not the Apple Tablet or MSFT Courier, but I am looking forward to seeing a couple colorful lightweight tablet launches.
- Mobile Devices: Even though CES isn’t a mobile device focused conference (like CTIA and Mobile World conference) – many mobile trends will be spotted here first. Remember all the hoopla about the Palm Pre last year? I expect that Palm will display an update to its Web OS and we’ll see mobile devices from companies that have never been in the mobile space. Likely themes will be: applications, touch, connectivity, and more concise iterations on existing functionality.
- Outrageous Gadgets and Games: In the past, I enjoyed the Schwinn Tailwind, Mattel’s Mind Flex and Wowwee Spyball. Look for more inventions that you never thought possible!
With that, I’d like to find out what gadgets and trends you think will be the blockbusters of 2010. Is it a uber-intelligent tablet? A new iteration on the all-knowing iRobot? A pocket projector? Or a gaming system (a la Project Natal)? There’s no wrong answer. The most sagacious and creative answer gets one of the new cases from Speck Products. I’ve said it before, and I will (now) say it again: I want waterless showers (vibration-powered?) to become a reality. Lazy but eco-friendly.
